Bunbury's Newton Moore Senior High School today won the Education (Secondary School) category of the national Active Australia Awards at Parliament House in Canberra.
The Active Australia Education (Secondary School) Award, presented by Sports Minister Jackie Kelly, recognises a school's contribution to promoting and encouraging greater participation in sport and physical activity by students at school and in the community.
Newton Moore Senior High School was the only Western Australia winner in a nine-category Awards ceremony dominated by Victorian finalists.
One of three government senior high schools in Bunbury, Newton Moore is one of the State's largest rural high schools with 950 students. It seeks to develop in students a concern and understanding of how to achieve physical skills, health and well-being.
The school provides programs that are exciting, innovative and well-delivered and that are regularly reviewed to ensure their continuing relevance.
The school has emphasised improved sport and physical activity participation by female students by modelling good exercise habits and providing pathways to community sport and recreation.
Through its sport and physical activity programs, the school hopes to achieve the Active Australia goal of life-long participation in sport and physical activity by students.
Busselton High School, WA, and West Moreton Anglican College, Karrabin, Queensland, were highly commended.
Other Active Australia Awards categories were in provider (small, medium and large organisation), education (primary), event, the Margaret Pewtress Memorial Award (for contribution to women's sport) and the Peak Network Award (see attachment).
