AIS APPOINTS PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS EXPERT

27 March, 2002

The AIS has enhanced its reputation as an innovator in sports science with the appointment of one of the world's leading coach educators, Dr Keith Lyons, to the newly-created position of Performance Analysis Coordinator.

The Australian Sports Commission, through its major program the AIS, has recognised the need for a Performance Analysis Unit (PAU)-a specialised technological service area for the benefit of athletes and coaches. In Dr Lyons, the Institute has found someone who can manage the development and application of these technologies.

'To secure the services of someone of Keith's experience and expertise is a major boost for the AIS,' AIS Director Michael Scott said. 'I have no doubt that our performance analysis service will break new ground in sports science.'

Mr Scott said the appointment of Lyons was made possible by Federal Government funding through the Australian Sports Commission.

Lyons, 49, is currently Director of Research and Enterprise, Centre for Performance Analysis, at the University of Wales Institute in Cardiff. He has been working with coaches and athletes in the performance analysis area for more than 20 years.

'Innovations in computer and video technology offer athletes and coaches exciting opportunities to observe, evaluate and enhance performance. My role will be to support athletes and coaches in the use of this technology in training and competition,' Lyons said.

'My aim is to work with coaches to provide information that impacts upon athlete performance. This, in turn, helps the coaches to develop. I am really looking forward to working within a structured system that is much admired in world sport.'

Lyons' book, Using Video in Sport (1988), was one of the first publications of its kind for coaches. He has worked with a range of sports at international level including soccer, cricket, netball, hockey, lacrosse, canoeing, rugby union and rugby league. For the past two years Lyons has been a national coach for slalom canoeing in Wales.

The AIS is a major program of the Australian Sports Commission and this year is celebrating its 21st birthday.
