10 September 2003 Steve O'Connor inducted into Soccer Australia's Hall of FameThe head coach of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Men's Soccer Program, Steve O'Connor, has been inducted into Soccer Australia's Hall of Fame. O'Connor, who has been head coach of the Institute's Men's Soccer Program since 1996, has been responsible for nurturing some of Australia's most outstanding young soccer talent. International players Mark Viduka, Craig Moore, Ned Zelic, Marco Bresciano and current Australian Socceroos coach Frank Farina have all come through the AIS Soccer Program. The AIS is regarded throughout the world as being at the forefront of elite athlete development and the Institute's soccer program is testament to that reputation. AIS Director Michael Scott paid tribute to O'Connor for his outstanding contribution to the success of the AIS Soccer Program and his induction into Soccer Australia's Hall of Fame. 'Steve has been senior coach of the Institute's soccer program since 1996 and has shown by his results that he is one of Australia's best coaches,' Mr Scott said. 'His coaching ability is reflected in the number of top class Australian soccer players who have gone onto to excel on the international soccer stage. 'It's fitting that Soccer Australia has chosen to recognise Steve's great contribution to Australian soccer by inducting him into the Hall of Fame.' O'Connor joins other famous Australian soccer identities such as Frank Farina, Johnny Warren and Joe Marston as members of Soccer Australia's Hall of Fame. The AIS Soccer Program, which was established in 1981 and competes in the National Youth league, aims to identify and develop outstanding young talent for the Australian under-20 youth team with the view to preparing them for Olympic and Socceroo squads. The Federal Government through the Australian Sports Commission funds the AIS Soccer Program.
