The Governance of Surf Life Saving in Australia - A Case Study Summary

Governance education

As flagged at the strategic planning workshop in 2000, the next phase of SLSA’s management improvement program targeted governance issues. SLSA embarked on a review of its governance and governance training, culminating in a workshop in February 2001. The cost to roll this out was $10,000. The ASC assisted with this cost. The training and workshop was delivered by Rigby Cooke lawyers. Following the workshop, SLSA introduced duty statements and selection criteria for Board members and amended the SLSA constitution regarding election of Board members.

This workshop was carried out at a national level and proved most beneficial, but as the SLSA structure involves the state affiliates, it was determined that it would also be beneficial to extend this education process to involve state affiliate organisations and SLSA subsidiary companies.

The next phase involved rolling out governance education to SLSA’s state affiliates with the goal of addressing governance issues with state affiliate organisations and SLSA subsidiary companies. This process involved a series of structured workshops and seminars on governance and covered topics identical to those previously addressed by SLSA at the national level.

SLSA worked closely with the ASC and developed a step-by-step process to implement and assist in the funding of this education program. The total cost of implementing the state governance education program was estimated at $45,000.
