AIS seeks Western Sydney's youth as future Olympians

15th January 2004

The Australian Institute of Sport and the National Talent Identification Program is searching Western Sydney's youth for Australia's future Olympians in the sport of slalom canoeing.

The program seeks boys and girls aged 12 to 15 years with a determination and persistence to succeed, and who are athletic and enjoy aquatic activities. No experience in canoeing is necessary, but a desire to compete internationally in canoe slalom and to represent Australia at the 2012 Olympic Games is essential.

Candidates able to train at the Penrith Whitewater Stadium and that have gained parental/guardian permission are being encouraged to register their interest online at www.ais.org.au/talent/slalom before March 1, 2004.

Five-time world champion and AIS/Australian head coach Richard Fox says the quality coaching, training and support environment in place is one of the best in the world and will uncover the Olympians of the future.

'This will be a life-changing experience for some young athletes,' said Fox. 'In time, those with the passion to succeed can expect to become the leading paddlers in Australia and enjoy a career representing their country on the international stage.'

The Western Sydney region has been chosen because apart from being home to one of the world's best whitewater training and competition venues-the Penrith Whitewater Stadium, Western Sydney is one of Australia's largest and fastest growing populations.

Canoe slalom is an exciting, skilful and adrenalin-charged sport and is one of the world's most mentally and physically demanding sports.

The project, Beyond Beijing - The next generation of Olympians, is a canoe slalom talent identification project conducted by the Australian Institute of Sport and the National Talent Search Program in conjunction with Australian Canoeing and the Penrith Whitewater Stadium.

For more information, or to register your interest before March 1, 2004, go to www.ais.org.au/talent/slalom or contact Dr Jason Gulbin, National Talent Search Coordinator on 02 6214 1619, or Richard Fox AIS/Australian head coach 0413 628 882.
