14 November 2004 Tasmania’s Sandy Bay celebrates club milestoneSandy Bay Swimming Club in Hobart stands to benefit from the Australian Sports Commission’s Club Development Network by becoming its 5000th member. Sandy Bay Swimming Club and the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) celebrated the milestone at a special ceremony in Hobart today proudly supported by the Australian Government and Australian Olympic swimmers, Adam Pine and Linda MacKenzie. The ASC’s Club Development Network is a free web-based program that supports the management and development of sporting clubs in key areas of management—leadership, planning, people and members. In the spirit of club development, Athens Olympians Adam Pine and Linda MacKenzie lent their support by conducting a free swim clinic to help improve the swimming skills and abilities of local children in Hobart. Sandy Bay, established in 1898, is one of the oldest sporting clubs in Australia. The small and vibrant family-based sports club will benefit from membership of the Club Development Network by improving services to its swimmers. The Australian Government is committed to improving participation in grassroots sport through its sports policy, Backing Australia’s Sporting Ability— A More Active Australia. ASC CEO Mark Peters says a main principle of the Club Development Network is to improve club management and to deliver better services to members. ‘The Club Development Network assists clubs by providing online tools so they can develop and deliver quality services and programs for their members,’ Mr Peters said. ‘We want to give sporting clubs and organisations the tools to improve what they offer the general public, allowing them to attract new members, retain existing ones and continue to be viable and a significant contributor to their local community.’ Sandy Bay Treasurer, Glenise Gale welcomes new members to join the swimming club. ‘We will use the strategies and resources of the Club Development Network to attract new members, particularly young swimmers,’ Ms Gale said. ‘We strive to deliver affordable services for new members and to get them involved in the club regardless of their age or ability.’ For more information go to the Australian Sports Commission’s Club Development Network web site at http://www.ausport.gov.au/clubs Contact: |
