Mitchelton Soccer Club wins 2005 Ausport Award for progressing club development

The Australian Sports Commission today announced the Mitchelton Soccer Club in Queensland as winner of the 2005 Ausport Award for excellence in club development.

The 2005 Ausport Awards recognise and reward the achievements, success stories and best practice of individuals and groups within the Australian sporting system.

This award recognises quality management practices in one of the following areas of the ASC’s Club Development Network checklist: leadership, planning, people and members.

Finalists Golden Square Football and Netball Club and Bribie Island and Districts Junior Rugby League Club were highly commended in the club development category.

ASC General Manager of Sport Performance and Development Brent Espeland said Mitchelton Soccer Club represented a great example of an effective and well-managed sports organisation which was driven by the principle of continuous improvement.

‘Mitchelton Sports Club exemplifies good management practices by effectively delivering a range of programs and initiatives to improve services to members,’ Mr Espeland said.

Mitchelton is one of the oldest sporting clubs in Brisbane. The vibrant, family-based club which boasts more than 650 members offers sporting opportunities for a diverse range of ages and abilities to play soccer.

Mitchelton developed a strategic plan to improve its management practices, to be more competitive and to grow its business. The club’s strategic plan contributed to its senior soccer team being promoted to the premier league, the highest grade in Queensland.

The club also introduced marketing initiatives to promote the club’s activities through match programs and fixtures which helped to raise the profile of the club within the premier league.

Improving participation in sports at all levels is a key objective of the Australian Government’s sports policy, Building Australian Communities Through Sport.

An independent judging panel comprised of representatives from the sports industry assessed nominations in each award category against key criteria to select the finalists.

Winners of the 2005 Ausport Awards were announced at the Sports Commission’s Our Sporting Future conference at the Sydney Convention Centre.
