27 April 2005 Doug Frost joins AIS Swimming programOlympic, world and Commonwealth gold medal winning swim coach Doug Frost will soon join the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Swimming program as senior coach. Frost was chosen ahead of a field of 13 highly qualified international and Australian candidates for one of the country’s most high profile swim coaching positions. Frost will join AIS senior coaches Vince Raleigh and Shannon Rollason and assistant coach John Fowlie on pool deck in Canberra, giving the squad a full complement following the recent departure to Canada of AIS head coach Pierre Lafontaine. Frost comes to the AIS a very well-known and respected figure in swimming circles having coached a then 17 year old Ian Thorpe to three gold medals at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He was also a national team coach on most Australian teams to contest world championships, Commonwealth Games and world championships in the period 1997-2002. Since then as head coach Frost has overseen the emergence of Southport Olympic Swim Club. Under his guidance Southport have gone from being ranked 53 at the 2004 National Age Championships to number three at this year’s National Age Championships. Frost is excited by the opportunity to coach at the AIS with its athletes, facilities and support. ‘It’s a very exciting decision—the opportunity to coach alongside Shannon and Vince and to access the amazing support available for swimmers and coaches at the AIS was central to my decision,’ Frost said. ‘The AIS Swimming program has a great group of committed and talented swimmers and I hope my skills and experience can help get them on future national teams and win medals at the highest international level.’ Acting AIS Director Professor Peter Fricker believes Frost will greatly benefit the AIS program. ‘Doug is one of Australia’s greatest swim coaches and to have him involved at the AIS with our swimmers will give them every opportunity to reach their potential.’ ‘Doug and the other coaches will soon have at their disposal the world’s most technically advanced swimming pool to assist AIS and national team athletes. The pool, due for completion in January 2006, is part of the Australian Government’s $70 million AIS redevelopment.’ Contact: Simon Langford, ASC Media Manager, 02 6214 1298 or 0418 605 541 |
