10 August 2005 New program helping kids build a healthy lifestyleLutheran Primary School – After School Care students are taking part in the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) exciting new Active After-school Communities (AASC) program aimed at building a healthier lifestyle for primary school aged children. The national program is part of the Australian Government’s $116m Building a Healthy, Active Australia package. It provides primary school-aged children with access to free, structured physical activity programs in the after-school timeslot of 3.00pm to 5.00pm. CEO, ASC, Mr Mark Peters, said the support and commitment of the local community for the AASC program has been fantastic. Community organisations have enthusiastically embraced the program and are critical to its success. ‘This is a great opportunity for the whole community to get involved in an exciting initiative that will make an impact on almost 150,000 Australian primary school aged children by 2007’ Mr Peters said. AASC Regional Coordinator, Riverina 2, Mr Scott Donovan, said AASC is all about children having fun while being active and to achieve this, the program is creating a non-competitive environment where children of all abilities feel comfortable taking part. ‘The program is all about creating opportunities for kids to increase their activity and confidence levels. We want to encourage them to try new things and get the message across that playing games with friends is fun’ Mr Donovan said. The AASC program at Lutheran Primary School – After School Care is being run on two afternoons a week. Over the course of the program, children taking part will have a basic introduction to a variety of physical activities including ball and multi-skill games. The program is also helping to link Lutheran Primary School – After School Care, the local community and sporting clubs through the involvement of community members in the delivery of these activities. People wishing to find out how to get involved in the program, including parents and deliverers, should contact the State Coordinator on 0437700302 or visit www.ausport.gov.au/aasc. For those schools and Out of School Hours Care Services (OSHCS) not involved, it is not too late to lodge an expression of interest, which can be downloaded from the AASC website. Expressions of Interest for 2006 will close on the 29th August, 2005.
