5 September 2005 $400,000 to encourage women into sports leadershipThe Australian Government through the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) and the Office for Women today announced that $400,000 in funding is now available to women across the country to pursue leadership opportunities in sport. The 2006 Sports Leadership Grants For Women, now in its fourth year, is an initiative of the Australian Government and is designed to further the training and development opportunities for women in sports leadership. ASC CEO Mark Peters said the ASC is committed to providing opportunities and improving the participation of women in leadership roles in sport. ‘The Sports Leadership Grants for Women initiative will provide women with financial support to gain valuable skills and experience in coaching, officiating, governance and management of sport,’ Mr Peters said. ‘Australian sport stands to benefit from improved participation of women through increased membership, a larger pool of volunteers and broader representation in leadership and decision-making roles. ‘Improving the involvement of women in sports leadership contributes to a strong, diverse and viable Australian sport system.’ The grants are available in five key areas: high performance coaching and officiating; Indigenous women; women in disability sport; women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and women in general sport leadership. Previous grant recipients reflect the diversity of the Australian sporting experience and have been drawn from many aspects of Australian sport and from across the country—metropolitan and regional areas. Funding of up to $5,000 is available to successful individual applicants and up to $10,000 for approved organisations.
