Sports participation on the rise in Australia

More Australians are participating in sport more frequently, according to new national statistics released today.

More than 70 percent of the Australian population aged 15 years and over took part in exercise, recreational physical activity and organised sport at least once a week on average in 2004.

Taking into account an increase in population, this represents a 14 per cent increase from this same survey in 2001.

Importantly, the number of Australians taking part in these activities at least three times a week increased by 1.8 million from 2001 to 2004, a jump of 27 per cent.

In 2004, golf, tennis, netball, soccer (outdoor football) and swimming continued to be the most popular organised sports.

Meanwhile, walking, aerobics/fitness activities, cycling, running and bush walking were the most popular physical recreational activities.

Both men and women were equally likely to participate in sport and physical recreation, but not surprisingly the choices varied.

In 2004, men were more likely to favour cycling, golf, running, soccer, cricket and Australian football.

Women were more likely to participate in walking, aerobics/fitness, swimming, netball, yoga and dancing.

These results are from the latest 2004 annual Exercise, Recreation and Sport Survey (ERASS) of the Australian population aged 15 years and over, which has just been released by the Australian Sports Commission, in partnership with the Departments of Sport and Recreation in the States and Territories.

Since 2001, ERASS has collected information on the frequency, nature and type of activities chosen for exercise, recreation and sport by people aged 15 years and over.
